BMW and MINI owners will now be able to take advantage of their GoPro cameras from within their vehicles.

Both automakers have announced a new partnership with GoPro that will allow owners to capture video and photos a bit easier by integrating their WiFi-enabled GoPro cameras with the vehicle’s infotainment system. The app doesn’t take advantage of all the functionality that GoPro’s cameras have to offer, but it will offer six different recording modes, including two time-lapse modes. The camera’s record function can also be started and stopped from the steering wheel.

The camera’s battery charge state will also be displayed on the screen along with the strength of the WLAN signal and the remaining recording capacity. When the vehicle is standing still, a preview image is displayed which shows the camera perspective.

Starting this month, 2012 and newer BMW Group vehicles equipped with either the BMW Apps or MINI Connected systems will be able to pair their iPhones with a GoPro camera and take advantage of the GoPro app from the vehicle’s infotainment screen. The iPhone must be connected to the vehicle through a USB cable or an iPhone adapter in order to use the GoPro app through BMW ConnectedDrive or the MINI Connected menus.

MINI owners must have their vehicle outfitted with the MINI Visual Boost, the MINI navigation system or the Wired Package and it must have the MINI Connected option.
